The Things to See and Do at the Museums

The Beautiful Museum Campus

The two-and-a-half-acre museum campus includes prominent examples of Driftless Area educational architecture from the 1864 and 1905, respectively, and green space for childrens' play, festivals, and programs. An underground mine and outdoor narrow-gauge mine train amusement ride make The Mining & Rollo Jamison Museums an important regional destination.

The Mining Museum & Rollo Jamison Museum Exhibit Galleries

The interior exhibit galleries are self-guided so you can tour them at your own pace. The Mining Museum exhibits trace the development of lead and zinc mining in the Upper Mississippi Valley mining district from the 1820s through 1979. The Rollo Jamison Museum is a one-man collection that takes you back in time to the turn of the 20th century for a look at rural life in Platteville and southwestern Wisconsin.

The 1845 Bevans Lead Mine Tour

A guided Mine Tour takes you underground to the Bevans Lead-Zinc Mine to see how the miners prospected for and mined Mississippi Valley Type (MVT) ore deposits -- a variety of lead and zinc deposits named for our region that are hosted in limestones and similar rocks. Not only do visitors experience a subterranean adventure, but also they see how miners entered and exited the mine and sent mineral materials to the surface.  (Please note that there are 90 steps to be climbed to tour the mine. Comfortable shoes and a fleece or light rain jacket are recommended.)

The Headframe Replica

The tour ends in the headframe and hoist house, where you see how mine workers and mineral materials were raised and lowered from at early 20th century zinc mine.

Riding the Mine Train

Take a seat in one of the ore cars pulled by the 1931 Whitcomb 5-ton mine locomotive for a tour of our grounds. (Rides on the mine train are given with each tour, weather permitting.)
